Anyone who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces, including Reserve Forces and Cadets, spouses and partners of such, may apply for membership. War artists and reportage artists who have served with troops are also eligible.
Applicants are accepted as Associate Members if their work is deemed to be of the requisite standard or they show sufficient promise and commitment to develop within the Society. The aim is to get everyone who joins to exhibition standard, which is high.
The Society is very keen to hear from artists who may show promise and who might benefit from some help and guidance to enable them to achieve the standards we require.
Applications should be made to the Secretary, together with images of current work, to enable the membership selection panel to make a decision. Ideally, the work should have been completed within the last 2 years and images may be supplied by email, as photographs by post, and/or by referral to websites depicting the applicant's work.
Associate Members pay an annual membership fee of £45 and are encouraged to submit works for the annual exhibition and other AFAS exhibitions.
All work in AFAS exhibitions is juried regardless of membership status, so everyone has an equal chance of having their work selected.
Associate Members who demonstrate a consistently high standard and a firm commitment to the ethos and activities of the Society may be considered for promotion to Full Membership. Full members pay the same subscription but enjoy enhanced benefits, such as the right to submit more works to exhibitions. Full members may also use ‘AFAS’ after their names and have full voting rights at meetings.
